
NEW YORK (PBS/SoundStage announcement) - The national music concert series, SOUNDSTAGE will feature folk-music legend, Joan Baez along with Grammy-winning artists,
Gillian Welch and
Nickel Creek on Thursday, August 19 on PBS. (Check local listings.)
During this episode of SOUNDSTAGE, Southern California trio,
Nickel Creek open the show with a performance that demonstrates not only versatile musicianship, but also their knack for exceptionally smooth harmonies with a set that includes, "I Should've Know Better," "Smoothie Song," and "This Side." Since their gold-selling debut release in 2002, the band has been named by Time magazine as one of five "music innovators for the new millennium and awarded a Grammy for their second album, 2002's This Side.
Next, Gillian Welch engages viewers with her uncanny ability to produce both soul and folk in the same breath. Her performance includes the Appalachian-influenced "Look at Miss Ohio" and "One Little Song" from her latest release, Soul Journey. The songstress has enjoyed immense success since her Grammy win for "I'll Fly Away" and "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby" from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.
Closing the show, is veteran rebel and folk icon, Joan Baez who brings a feeling of dignity and humor to her performances of "Joe Hill," "Diamonds and Rust," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The evening recalls her early success as a stunning soprano who provided the soundtrack for the times and also shows that she is looking after folk's future with performances of, "In My Time of Need" and "Caleb Meyer" from her 2003 release, Dark Chords on a Big Guitar.
SOUNDSTAGE made its triumphant return to PBS with a new state-of-the-art makeover in July of 2003, and celebrated a highly successful first season featuring performances by Tori Amos, Chicago, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Michael McDonald, Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman, Trace Adkins, Amy Grant and many more. The series originally aired from 1974 to 1985 with widespread critical praise for its pioneering concert-format programs.
Now, SOUNDSTAGE has returned for a second season with 13 brand new, one-hour episodes featuring performances by Fleetwood Mac, Burt Bacharach, Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows, Ronald Isley, Kris Kristofferson, Cyndi Lauper, Shelby Lynne, Lisa Marie Presley, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts featuring Russell Crowe and more!
