Aimed at shaping the future of transplantation in the United States, the Power2Save initiative focuses on supporting the latest advances in medical research, which is critical in giving patients and their families the greatest chance to live long, healthy, and productive lives after transplantation.
"In order to reduce the number of individuals waiting to receive a viable organ, we must first educate the public about the need and the importance of registering as a donor," said
Daniel R. Salomon, M.D, president of AST. "An average of 18 people die each day, due to the severe shortage of organs available. One registered donor has the power to make a difference and save up to eight lives."
As advocates for patient health, members of AST are also focusing their efforts on spanning the development of the latest drug therapies to help improve patient and donor lives, post-transplantation.
"For many patients suffering from end-stage organ failure, transplantation offers a second chance at living a normal life," added Salomon. "We need to take every opportunity to advance awareness of the life-saving importance of organ donation and transplant research; each and every individual has the power to be a hero and make a difference in the lives of others."
