The San Luis Obispo man was 74. Ernie Ball Inc. - based in San Luis Obispo from 1985-2003 - put guitars and other equipment into the hands of music legends such as Metallica, Paul McCartney and B.B. King. Sterling Ball, the company's president, said his father was a revolutionary in the guitar industry. Ernie Ball Inc. is the second-largest guitar strings company with $40 million in annual sales, according to Music Trades, an industry trade magazine. Ernie Ball is survived by his wife, Ani; sons Sherwood, Sterling and David; daughter Nova; and eight grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at San Luis Cemetery, 2890 S. Higuera St., San Luis Obispo. Wheeler-Smith Mortuary is handling arrangements.
