WATSONVILLE, CA. (California Cut Flower Commission/ www.ccfc.org) - Life isn't very sweet for many of the sick children at Children's Hospital in Oakland. That's why the Master Florists Association want to raise money and hopes at a benefit concert starring Davy Jones of Monkees' fame on October 16 at the Paramount Theater in Oakland.
Also sponsoring the event are the California State Floral Association, Extra Touch Florists Association, John Henry Co., the California Cut Flower Commission, the San Francisco Flower Market, Monterey Bay Chocolates and radio station KFRC.
Concert-goers will get more than an evening of great music and the opportunity to help raise funds for the hospital. Twenty-five hundreds roses will be given out, courtesy of the California Cut Flower Commission.
A well-known holiday celebrated primarily in the Midwest and on the East Coast, Sweetest Day was envisioned more than 60 years ago when a Cleveland man decided to give small gifts to the city's orphans and shut-ins. He wanted to "sweeten" their day by spreading cheer and kindness.
Since that time, the third Saturday in October has been a day, not only to remember the needy, but also friends, family and others who have made life just a bit sweeter.
Jones first came to fame in the 1960s in the hit TV series "The Monkees." Since that time, he has been both a serious actor and a comedian on the theatrical stage, as well as a rock musician, composer and artist.
Fans of "The Monkees" will remember that Davy was a real sweetheart back then, with stars twinkling in his eyes for many of the girls he met. Now, Jones may well be on his way to becoming the unofficial Sweetest Day troubadour; performing in Chicago last year, this will be his second Sweetest Day concert.
Opening for Jones will be the LTD Dancers, a nationally award-winning dance team from Antioch. The Sweetest Day benefit concert starts at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 16 at the Paramount Theater, 2025 Broadway, Oakland. Tickets are $42.50 & $38.50 and are available at Ticketmaster and the Paramount Theater Box Office.
