MIAMI, FL. (MTV Networks Latin America PR/ https://www.mtvla.com) - Hip Hop and Latin music fused MTV style at the 3rd Annual MTV Video Music Awards Latin America (VMALA), which broadcast tonight from the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach to MTV Latin America, MTV2 and MTV Espanol in the United States and MTV Puerto Rico.

Mexican Julieta Venegas dominated, collecting three awards including "Artist of the Year". Mexico's Cafe Tacvba and the US Maroon 5 garnered two 'tongue topped' awards each, with one of Cafe Tacvba's win being for "Video of the Year".
Black Eyed Peas walked away with the show's newest and first ever "Best International Hip Hop/R&B Award".

The show started with U2's Bono welcoming the audience in Spanish. Immediately after, Latin superstar and host Paulina Rubio, set the show's over-the-top tone early as she made her entrance in a custom designed Roberto Cavalli superhero inspired ensemble on a fifteen foot tongued chariot crafted to resemble the VMALA award statuette, carried by four chiselled male escorts. Ms. Rubio's multiple wardrobe changes throughout the night featured designs from Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Fornarina, Blue Marine and Missoni, among others.

Diego Torres, La Ley, Julieta Venegas and Black Eyed Peas delivered the night's opening performance with a dynamic infusion of hip hop hits Spanish-language covers featuring Usher's "Yeah", Outkast's "Hey Ya!" and Black Eyed Peas "Oh Mama". Black Eyed Peas themselves topped the performance with their single "Let's get it started".

The Mexican rap-metal band Molotov debuted their new single "Amateur"which is a remake of the early 80's Falco hit, "Rock Me Amadeus", while Julieta Venegas and Cartel De Santa joined to sing Julieta's "Lento"; and Paulina Rubio, Pitbull and DJ Toy performed "Tequila".
Additional performances appealing to Anglo and Latin American music devotees alike included Lenny Kravitz, The Rasmus, Tiziano Ferro, Juanes, Alex Ubago and Beastie Boys bringing down the house with "Ch-check it out" and "Sabotage" to close the night.

The VMALA will air on MTV U.S. on Saturday, October 30th at 11:00 p.m. PT/ET and the show will also be made available to MTV's 44 channels around the world throughout November.
In true MTV style, the VMALA's award is a tongue - symbolizing the Spanish language that unites all Latin Americans throughout the region.
The third annual "MTV Video Music Awards Latin America is sponsored by Coca-Cola, Visa International Latin America, Hewlett Packard, Motorola, McDonald's and Ford.

Charlie Singer, Executive VP of Programming, Creative and Marketing Strategy, MTV Networks Latin America served as executive producer. Audrey Morrissey (a veteran of many MTV productions and award shows, and producer of "Alejandro Sanz MTV Unplugged," "La Ley MTV Unplugged" and two previous VMALAs) served as producer; Manny Rodriguez ("Alejandro Sanz MTV Unplugged," "La Ley MTV Unplugged") directed and Jose Tillan, VP of Music and Artist Relations, MTV Networks Latin America supervised the musical content of the show. vThe VMALAs 2004 acknowledges the support of the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, the Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Board of County Commissioners, and the City of Miami Beach.
