New Orleans, LA. (Top40 Charts/ Georgianne Nienaber) - Susan Cowsill won Best Female Vocalist honors at OffBeat Magazine's "Best of the Beat Awards" in New Orleans on January 9, 2008. Cowsill competed against iconic singers Marva Wright and Irma
Thomas in the vocalist category. OffBeat is a New Orleans monthly music magazine, and "The Best of the Beat Awards" celebrates local music and musicians including R&B, blues, brassbands, jazz, cajun music, zydeco, and rock.
Roots singer Cowsill is a full-time New Orleans resident and performs regularly throughout the city she has called home for over fifteen years. Cowsill is kicking off a busy 2008 touring season with several January dates in California, both with the sixties pop group, the Cowsills, and her own Susan Cowsill Band.
Mardi Gras would not be complete without Cowsill's contributions to the festivities, which are just getting fully back on track after the devastation of Huricane Katrina in August 2005. On February 9, Cowsill will headline her own Carrollton Station, 2nd Annual FREE Mardi Gras Show with Friends.
Later in February, Cowsill will be in Japan, along with Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Love in the Time of Cholera), honoring a special invitation to participate in the P.E.N. International conference on culture and disasters.
March finds the singer touring the upper Midwest, with dates in Minnesota and North Dakota. Three days of performances at Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando Florida (May 26-28) will cap the spring leg of her tour.
Susan Cowsill will head back to Minnesota in July with The Cowsills.
New Orleans' Wet Bank Guide (September 2007) called Susan Cowsill's Katrina song, Crescent City Snow, "arguably the best of the lot. It is the anthem we have all been waiting for. To hear it is to want to buy it." It can be purchased on the New Orleans Musicians Relief benefit CD, ReDefine.
Susan Cowsill was the Winner in Best Roots Rock category at Big Easy Awards on April 24, 2007.
Whether delivering a heart-tugging ballad or belting out a punchy rock tune, critics agree that Susan Cowsill has an exceptional talent for connecting with a song's emotional core. Rolling Stone praised Cowsill's voice as "The hardy, heartbreaking sound of 'a bar-band angel' in the prime of her singing and songwriting life." The Washington Post proclaimed "As good as Cowsill's voice is, her smart, emotional songwriting is her biggest asset." All Music Guide raved "Cowsill has stories to tell and she tells them with a skill and vigor that never lets artifice get in the way of cutting to the emotional truth?"
