NEW YORK (Pestolaer Official Website) - Pestolaer... what a strange name... what's the meaning of it? I asked them but they do not have any answer... it's just name...
Is there any story of it... they kept silence... yeah, it's just a simple name without any meaning.
Many people said that "pestolaer" is the first band with the kind of funny Indonesian name, majority they have it in English (1990) just like "toilet, Waiting room, wonder gel, the fly, submission, anti septic, slank etc... after that the name of PESTOLAER inspired many bands in Indonesian name, just like: rumah sakit, jepit rambut, planet bumi, plester, etc.
Hmmm, it is an unique and interesting name. Said Tongkley as the first producer for Pestolaer when they tried to make a negotiation with major label ....But the nose sniff the ground ASAP (1998) after they had tour with some artiste...
Turn in to Roses
The bands started in early 1990's, 4 young teenagers made a school band, they are:
Boris (drums) P.A (bass) Nyoman (Lead guitar& Bac,Voc) Taba(Guitar, Lead Voc)
What about Pestolaer said nyoman........then the Band came with the sex pistols songs.... The bands keep living until Nyoman left the band and made the new grunge. "Arvana" with Eki (planet Bumi) and Gani –RIP, The first demo ever for grunge I think! Those guys are fuckin' genius! They released the demo for the band. But ArvaNa was over and Nyoman came back to the pops with Planet bumi. And the winds blows with the ganja....Pestols met a new comer in neighborhood , "Arya" as a guitarist...Then the bands keep go on stage for more than 100 times until now....People were recognized pestolaer in Indonesian punk rock story especially in, Jakarta. The name was so closed band with sex pistols image....the most local pistol ever...The story of the band become bigger when Taba met Ondy in IKJ when Sub mission played in early 90's
The bands lives about 5 years in punks In the punk rock era.. They were known as a part of the designer garbage for the style together with younG offender...
They're also known as the first badge in Jkt who repaired the boots form 12 holes into 23 holes with the belts. And also he likes to steal a chain from Toilets and washer sink tube and collected them as a ring, necklace or any accessories. They find the first character in U.K punk songs. They become famous in it. When punk rock teenagers were cum into publics.....pestols started sad because they were not really a punk become in to a style only ...we loved to get drunks in cemetery, train station not a mall .....But in the year 2003 until now...punk rock comes into purity again...The soul cum back...most of them living on the street....Oi!
Pestolaer started getting bored with sexpistols because they sing all the songs....then, they expand to the 70's U.K punks such as the blitz, 999, the clash etc. Pestolaer not in nazi or U.S punks,.... They also hated emo or 90's punks....most of 90's have lot of skills not a pure rock n' roll.
....Boris and Arya were the first starter a new movement for the band...
In 1996 it was the latest time the pestols announce on stage that they are stop bring the punk rock songs and cum into psychedelic songs. I remember it was the first time The PAS band (bandung) play in Jakarta. (pesta alternative1) . It was the first time pestolaer sing their own songs on stage titled "My lord". But never recorded in tape. Many punkers were so upset when they saw Pestol left the punkroCk...Many things happened in the first time because of their disappointed to this band...but the story goes on like a wheel. Then pestol wrote down the story in the songs titled, satu, wader man & some friendly. BuT pEstol waS oN the ToP of the ceIling aT thaT time...so; it did not give a big ShiT to them.....
The first time I think, "What a stupid, arrogant statement can't. Figure it out!!" But then it's a fuckin' true! I saw people from Berland, semi product and some others joint the Indies league from the punk rock and to the pops and follow the pistols in many gigs... They might do something' bad if they saw pestolaer got any act of blasphemy on stage from crowded
Arya with Boris brought the band to the British pop songs. Started with The stone roses, the soup dragon, Ride, than cum the blur.... They bought some CD & magazines as references, Such as "The volume" CDs. With sea fishes as a cover and a book for every band stories. "The Indie" CDs, that use the fowl as covers. And "Select" magazine. We were not started only with notes but also the style and the concept. And I think, that is the reason why they still have living in mind....one of pioneer band with a strong concept although many bands hated them for this. In the late of 2003 most of the bands have their own branded just like the: Naif with 70's, The Club 80's with 80's, The Brandals with attitude, Upstairs with the style, etc. No band can stand without specific character...Bravo pestolaer was the first!
SECOND COMING
At the second coming of Pestolaer era, many people did not like pestolaer because of many reasons...maybe from they fucking "indie" style, fucking artiste act, fucking narcissism or fuckin' arrogance or whatever...even until now...but I never found them lost their guts in facing people,...then they made a slogan "some might hate" in 1996. On the other side, many people also cannot refuse and admitted about pestolaer existence in the underground movement until now. Not only as a band but also an icon in Jakarta underground movement history. Even their own colors are hard to replacing with the latest bands until now. This band had difficulties in facing people or crowded, stupid didn't they? They re prefer playing cards before or after the show better than chatting or going into crowded...So, people known them as an arrogant band...Cut tHe cRa*No 2!~!!!
He whispered something to my ear when we were smoking' dopes in Poster café he said " I m tired with violence and culture of hate.... But, Anarchy still live tattooed in my heart not in appearance" then I laughed and said "Ha,ha,ha whatever you said man!"...and he smiled...First I though we're too drunk,....but when they play on stage I saw him and thought.... He was fuckin' serious....He try to express his feelings in "colors" and try to said something in his songs just like "oempama & sessions." I like them and I hate them in the same time.... There was the time that pestolaer felt alone only with little fellows....no porch no rain. The issue getting worse for the band....It made a great barrier among the music streams...but on the other hands the people become more fanatic with their own gigs...there is no unity in underground at that time...then Pestol told us in their songs...Tambourine, Hari & Satu. Lately, in the year 1998 they hated if people called them the brit pop bands, better for the name "iNdie Pop" not for British but for us...Indonesian then they started create the songs in Indonesian language in the second album "Jang Doeloe" but it wasn't so good there are many emotional feeling with no solution...
They admitted that they were not the first band who brings the indie rock on stage in Jakarta...N E W D I E A S E S did! In the black hole era.
But pestols songs the most for stone roses on stage then to the charlatans u.k....the verve...ride... and many more....most the old Britt pop scene.
THE BAND STORY
The band first manager in 1992 for 2 years is Reza. He is fond of in vintage cars and photographer. They hoped about money....but money never come very much... they think bigger when they're smaller....Many people called them The survivor 1994...together with waiting room, wonder gel. If there are changes of player in bands is usually happens in survival, let say slank or dewa 19, but there are not many bands can survive in maneuver of based influence. Pestolaer did! From punks to Indie....Can you imagine...many bands need fans but pestolaer left their fans ....and do 180o maneuvers from the 78% youth adrenalin mixed with the anarchy to peace lover with flowers.
Pestolaer started finding the 2nd soul after Arie legowo joint the band since 1998.Legowo brought the new colors in bands ...He left his own bands who play the acid jazz. He fond of him self much in strange notes came from charlatans soul. He always plays the old sounds "Hammond" very much. He also has a big part in pestolaer story to the recording. Many old pals' help the pestols garden....Boyke (Ruly brandal's brother) is one of a founder in warrock management. He becomes the back voc or the rhythm guitar .....I fond him self much in rock n' roll soul...But the latest time in the roses blossom...boyke much spent his time in warrock management in the part of marketing to Bandung...
In the early morning of indie rock era..Pestolaer have a dancer...Octa...always perform the psychedelic dance on stage when the pestolaer played...I saw crowded tried to follow his step in front of stage for a few times... Lately octa known as Dj for a private community in JkT
Ebie (Octa brother's) also playing in the pestols garden His home is a" warrock management" home base. Camp...place where we share and smoked... he also registered as an old skool in neighborhood and joint the Young Offender in the first badge. He becomes a rhythm guitarist when the song got into more complicated. Then, Bimo become the second manager and trying to bring the band into more public space with major label. And he started manage pestols into recording since the 1st and 2nd album.
