"Christmas On Mars," the science fiction holiday movie written, directed and starring The Flaming Lips will now not be seen this December as previously announced, due to the group's intensive slate of activities. It is now projected for release in December of 2005. A brand new, second film trailer will be available soon. Check www.flaminglips.com for details.
The Lips have also recorded a new song exclusively for the "SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Music From The Movie And More," which will be released on Sire Records, November 9, 2004. "SpongeBob And Patrick Confront The Psychic Wall Of Energy," will be the first single from the album with a video to follow directed by Wayne Coyne. Another new studio project of note includes an invitation from Yoko Ono to record a mash-up style track combining Yoko's "Cambridge 1969" and newly recorded music by The Lips. Further project details to be confirmed shortly.
More great studio news for Lips fans: Due to the overwhelming success and critical praise of the "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" 5.1 Surround Sound Mix, the band and Dave Fridmann will finally remix their groundbreaking 1999 release, "The Soft Bulletin" into the 5.1 audio realm. Release is expected in the first quarter of 2005.
In other news, the group will headline the second day of the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival, curated this year by Modest Mouse and held in Long Beach, California, on the Queen Mary, and at the adjacent Marina Park, November 6th and 7th, 2004. The appearance will come in the midst of an intensive recording schedule with long-time producing partner Dave Fridmann, who is working with the band on the follow-up to their epochal, Grammy® Award-winning 2003 release, "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots." The new album, "At War With The Mystics," is tentatively set for release in mid-2005.
Also on The Flaming Lips' 2005 event horizon is a documentary film by acclaimed video director Bradley Beesley (Okie Noodling, etc.) and Shout Factory Films chronicling the band's emergence as a major music force over the past two decades. Again, details to be confirmed soon. Additionally, a book on the band is being written by renowned Chicago Sun-Times music journalist Jim DeRogotis.
