JazzMN Big Band Opens New Season With 'Ellington and Beyond' Featuring 'Young Lion' Ryan Kisor, Trumpet, Carole Martin, Vocalist, 7:30 PM, Saturday, November 5, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS, MI. (JazzMN Big Band) - JazzMN Big Band opens its 2005-2006 season with "Ellington and Beyond," featuring "Young Lion" trumpet player Ryan Kisor, a soloist in the Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band, and guest vocalist Carole Martin on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at 7:30 PM, under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Snapp.

The concert location is the new Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center, 2400 Lindbergh Drive, one half-mile off Highway 169, west on Cedar Lake Road, with free adjacent parking. For further information go to https://www.jazzMN.org .

Ryan Kisor's command of both classic and contemporary jazz styles will be featured in "Nostalgia in Times Square" (Charlie Mingus), "Three and One" (Thad Jones), "Concerto for Cootie" (Duke Ellington), "Black Nile" (Wayne Shorter), "Moanin'" (Mingus) and "Perdido" (Ellington).

Carole Martin will sing Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light." Her latest CD, "Pieces of Dreams," was named one of the "top 20 Albums of 2004" by the Star Tribune.

The JazzMN Big Band personnel features Brian Grivna, Pete Whitman, Dave Karr, Dave Milne, Kathy Jensen on saxophone; Michael Nelson, Dave Graf, Ethan Freier, Wade Clark on trombone; Bernie Edstrom, Jeff Gottwig, Eric Wagonsteen, Tim Sullivan on trumpet; Laura Caviani, piano; Clay Moore, guitar; Ron Evanuik, bass; Joe Pulice, drums.

Ryan Kisor was born April 12, 1973, in Sioux City, Iowa, where he studied trumpet with his father at age four. He played in the local band when he was ten, studied classical music two years later and discovered jazz at Clark Terry's summer camp when he was fourteen. In 1990, he won the first annual Louis Armstrong trumpet competition at the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz at age seventeen. He enrolled in The Manhattan School of Music in 1991, studying under Lew Soloff. He has recorded several albums as a leader, including "Power Source" (2001), and "Awakening" (2003).
