NEW YORK (Top40-Charts) - As 'NSync proclaimed with its newest hit single this summer, pop ruled the charts this year. Pop fans helped send seven albums to the No. 1 spot in their first week in stores, just edging out the rock acts, who were represented by a respectable six No. 1 debuts.

All in all, 22 albums can lay claim to the bragging rights of debuting at No. 1 this past year, but many of them didn't spend much time there. Several artists were booted from the chart's pole position after only one week, including Janet Jackson (All for You), Tool (Lateralus), and Michael Jackson (Invincible).

No artist spent more than five weeks in the No. 1 spot this year (Shaggy's Hotshot and Creed's Weathered both managed that feat). Shaggy's run, however, was not consecutive; and Creed's run has been cut off by the end of the year -- Weathered will likely log more weeks at No. 1 in 2002.

Still, it's always nice to land in the coveted top spot, especially if you're 'NSync (Celebrity), Creed (Weathered), Britney Spears (Britney), Dave Matthews Band (Everyday), and Staind (Break the Cycle) -- the top five debuts of the year, respectively.

Here's a rundown of 2001's No. 1 debuts:

  • Jennifer Lopez, J. Lo; 272,262 (Epic/Handprint Entertainment)
  • Dave Matthews Band, Everyday; 732,720 (RCA)

  • Blink-182, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket; 348,846 (MCA)
  • D12, Devil's Night; 371,881 (Interscope)
  • Alicia Keys, Songs in A Minor; 235,816 (J Records)
