Sydney, AU. (Top40 Charts/ EMI MUSIC Australia) -
Suzanne Vega returns to Australia for a series of concerts in 2008 and to capture the unique essence of Vega's eclectic pop/folk stylings, the venues for her Australian tour are the intimate spaces of Australia's finest showrooms.
When Suzanne Vega's debut album - Suzanne Vega - was released in 1985, it was a platinum-selling success. With two hit singles - Luka and Tom's Diner - featured on her next effort, Solitude Standing (1987), the undeniable talents of this Manhattan native were firmly established in the hearts and minds of legions of fans across the world.
Since then, with a total of 8 solo albums and songs featured on soundtracks of major Hollywood films, the commercial and critical acclaim for this incredible singer/songwriter, who wrote her first song at the tender age of fourteen, continues.
In August, 2006, Suzanne Vega became the first major recording artist to perform in avatar form in the online virtual world, Second Life. In 2007, her latest album release - the deeply personal Beauty & Crime - Vega's talents as a singer/songwriter are displayed like never before.
On Beauty & Crime, Suzanne Vega's Blue Note Records debut, New York City is the backdrop for a collection of eleven new songs that juxtapose acoustic guitar-driven melodies with coolly synthesised beats; intensely personal lyrics with compelling, short story-like narratives; images of today's scarred cityscape with Vega's own memories of coming-of-age in the Upper West Side 'hood and Lower East Side haunts. Past mingles with present; public with private and old blends with new just like the fabulous city itself.
Making her first new studio album in six years, Vega says, "I feel like I really stretched my limits. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone - to sing in keys I wouldn't have sung in before, to work with different textures, to be unafraid of doing what ever sounded good to me. I wanted to make a modern classic."
Supporting Suzanne Vega will be country music sensation Sara Storer, who has achieved a string of awards since first coming to prominence in 2001 when she released her first album Chasing Buffalo. The result of this album was three number one singles on the Australian Country Charts.
Her second album, Beautiful Circle was released in 2002 and produced another number one single, an unprecedented seven Golden Guitar Awards at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and entry into the ARIA Album Charts in 2004.
With a childhood spent in country Victoria, when Sara Storer sings about her love of rural Australia, you know it is from the heart.
Her latest album, Silver Skies, featuring the single Land Cries Out, is yet another deeply personal insight into the plight facing farmers today, highlighting the emotional power of her song-writing talents.
'I wanted the song to talk about the land having a soul,' Sara says. 'I wanted to sing it from the point of view of the land, to be able to call: 'don't give up'.'
Don't miss two of music's most distinctive singers and storytellers touring Australia in 2008.
