NEW
YORK (Scarlet A Records) Just like the jolt to the system the peaceful,
easy mid-'70s got when punk rock arrived, UNDERGIRL has done it again
with MY FLASH ON YOU. The band's latest CD, packed with 11 of the kind
of original rock 'n' roll songs you haven't felt since Sticky Fingers,
heralds music's wake-up call once again, but with a difference. This
time, the women are running the show.
"Radio Action" and "Fancy
Snakes" kick it off with all the attitude of The
Sex Pistols and The
Ramones for a new century. Sexy, raw-voiced Amy DiCamillo adds to the
molten, punk melting pot: "If the Dead Boys and the Hot Snakes had a
baby, named her rock 'n' roll, and she grew up to have the mouth of
Mick Jagger, the hair of MC5, the moves of Marc Bolan, the mind of Syd
Barret and the heart of Nick Drake" is the way she describes the
band's frantic sound. DiCamillo rocks lead vocals and guitars along
with band members Becky Vomit on bass, Matthew Billick on guitars, and
drummer Frank Domanico.
Poised to be the break-out tune, "Boy's
Club" tells a double story of the anger and grrl power close to
UNDERGIRL's heart. It's about "being friends with someone, trusting
them, and getting stabbed in the back," says Amy, and then "watching
all your guy friends play in their bands (while knowing that your band
kicks all their asses)."
With basic tracks all laid down in a
single weekend, MY FLASH ON YOU follows the band's first full-length
CD, She's Too Much For My Mirror (2001 Scarlet A Records). Both were
produced by Kris Alutius and recorded at Slugg Studios in Collingswood,
NJ. UNDERGIRL has have performed on the Warped Tour and has shared the
stage with the likes of The Strokes, Lunachicks, At the Drive-In and
The New York Dolls' Sylvain Sylvain.
DiCamillo admits that even
with a true tough chick attitude, she has more than a few fun-loving
and thought-provoking influences. A writing breakthrough came for her
on "Friday Night," an AC/DC-styled good-time rock 'n' roll song from
start to finish.
"I just love music so much," she says, "From
the love of my life, R.E.M., to the Faces and
Neil Young ... and the
recent winner of my heart, the beautiful Nick Cave."
