Joni Mitchell is the artist behind Paste Magazine's Oct/Nov cover. The watercolor rendering of Cameron Crowe, Orlando Bloom, and Kirsten Dunst, marks Mitchell's first use of watercolor in 30 years. Her last use of the medium was in 1974 for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "So Far" album. She even used the exact same painting kit she had used 30 years ago.
Mitchell said: "I haven't painted [like that] in years. I opened up the caps with trepidations. I thought they'd all be dried up. Some colors had, but many hadn't. I had a limited palette! But I think all the elements are there - the black fences, the green grass of Kentucky, and an indication of those flowering fruit trees. It's pretty abstract."
Also in the Oct/Nov issue:
- A Paul McCartney Q&A on his collaboration with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and the album that resulted - CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD, which Paste hails as one of Sir McCartney's best in years.
- Features on Iceland's Sigur Rós, Big Star's first album in 30 years, and on-the-road with the Kentucky-fried boys of My Morning Jacket.
- A behind-the-scenes look at the technology and special effects of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Joss Whedon's Serenity, and the Harry Potter series.
- And Paste's take on the latest from Kanye West, Franz Ferdinand, Bjork, Ryan Adams, & Herbie Hancock.
