 NEW
YORK (JALC) Jazz at Lincoln Center brings together two giants of the
trombone, Joseph Alessi, principal trombone, New York Philharmonic and
Wycliffe Gordon, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra alumnus, composer and
arranger, for a master class called "Two Sides of the Slide." Mr.
Alessi and Mr. Gordon have performed together through collaborations
with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic,
taught together in the bi-annual Alessi Seminar, and are both
professors at the celebrated Juilliard School. This represents the
first time they will meet on a public stage to share ideas, techniques
and their love of playing the trombone. The first half will
feature Mr. Alessi and Mr. Gordon comparing notes on playing the
trombone and essentially, taking a lesson from each other. They will
explore the challenges and intricacies of musical performance using
classical and jazz repertoire. The second half of the program
will feature Juilliard jazz and classical trombone students performing
individually and in quartets. Mr. Alessi will coach a jazz student and
quartet then Mr. Gordon will coach a classical student and quartet on
sound, technique, style and phrasing. All of the trombone students will
join Mr. Alessi and Mr. Gordon for a final trombone choir performance. This educational event is in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic.
